Meadowvale

Meadowvale Village is one of Mississauga's most historically significant communities, with roots stretching back to 1819 when 29 Irish families from New York State settled in the area. The village developed around the Credit River, where saw and grist mills were established in 1831 to serve the farming community. Francis Silverthorn expanded the milling operations in 1844, and the village grew into a prosperous rural centre with a post office, churches, and a schoolhouse.

In 1980, Meadowvale Village earned a remarkable distinction: it became Ontario's first Heritage Conservation District, recognising the community's exceptional collection of 19th-century buildings and its well-preserved village character. This designation has ensured that the historic core of Meadowvale retains its charming streetscape of heritage homes, mature trees, and the scenic Credit River valley — a living reminder of what Mississauga looked like before the era of suburban expansion.

The broader Meadowvale area has grown dramatically since the 1970s, with modern residential subdivisions and the Meadowvale Business Park bringing thousands of residents and workers to the community. Yet the historic village at its heart remains a treasured landmark, offering walking trails, community events, and a tangible connection to Mississauga's pioneer past. Today's Meadowvale blends heritage character with suburban convenience, excellent schools, and easy access to Highways 401 and 407.
